Equilibrium in Life

Work Life Balance...Can you really achieve a balance between your responsibilities at work and your responsibilities in the rest of your life? Some say yes; however, most of us struggle with the concept. For something to "balance", equal weight has to be distributed on multiple sides. Does that mean you should spend the same amount of time focused on each? I do not think so! I prefer the term "equilibrium", which implies a saturation of each where it really needs to be.

The website www.WebMD.com offers the following five tips to keep your mind safe from burnout, while maintaining productivity in all areas of your life:

  1. Build down-time into your schedule.
  2. Drop activities that sap your time or energy.
  3. Rethink your errands.
  4. Get moving.
  5. Remember that a little relaxation goes a long way.
My focus today is on building down-time into your schedule. In this age of gadgets and "apps", making your time work for you has never been easier--or has it? My personal experience with scheduling has involved everything from calendars on paper, to-do lists and calendars using Microsoft Outlook, as well as the standard calendar on my iPhone and various apps. I found out quickly that one method or the other had no benefit if I didn't look at it from time to time. I found the best method for me is a combination of several tools:  I keep a calendar on paper in synchronization with the calendar feature on my iPhone (which reminds me to manage my time), and a project management iPhone app that helps me track my progress.

This may seem like overkill to some, but it is what works for me. What works for you? I encourage you to try out a method at the time over the course of a week or two, and find out. You will be surprised how much time you will save by better managing your time, rather than wondering where the time has gone.
